Long before any trauma patient arrives in your medical care, roles must be identified and allocated to each member of the trauma team.

TEAM MEMBERS


The membership of the trauma team will depend on the availability of staff. Ideally, it should comprise:

:: On-duty emergency doctor or experienced health worker (team leader)
:: On-duty emergency nurse
:: 1 or 2 additional helpers.

Take patient history from the
patient or family
Request X-rays (if possible)
Perform the secondary survey
Consider tetanus prophylaxis and
antibiotics
Reassess the patient
Prepare the patient for transfer
Complete the documentation

When the patient actually arrives, a rapid overview is necessary. This is known
as triage. Triage means to prioritize patient management according to:

:: Personnel available
:: Resources available.
